PAID POSITIONS
1. SHRIMP CAMPAIGNER
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Environmental Justice Foundation’s dynamic team as a campaigner on its shrimp campaign. This role will work on EJF’s shrimp campaign where you will work with the Directors to build the profile of the campaign by raising public, corporate and political awareness of the environmental and social impacts of these industries.
This is a challenging role that demands proven relevant experience and skills to deliver on ambitious plans.
You should have experience in managing complex projects which achieve change and experience in all elements of campaigning including initiating, planning, implementing and evaluating campaigns. You must also be able to demonstrate excellent research, writing and communication skills.
The role will include but would not be limited to the following:
· Together with the directors you will identify key areas of research / investigative possibilities overseas and undertake investigations. You will be required to undertake UK-based research, planning, logistics and other support or follow-up post-trip/s.
· Developing, planning and implementing a strategy for policy engagement and corporate outreach for the campaign
· Responsibility for overseeing the production of campaign reports and briefings, public awareness documents (leaflets, web-pages, news updates), including undertaking specific research where needed and also cross-checking the validity and strength of draft reports produced by junior staff and interns you may be the line-manager for. You will be expected to sign-off on documents indicating that you are satisfied with the accuracy of the information.
· Ensuring the campaign is showcased regularly and appropriately across social media such as Facebook and Twitter
· You will on occasion support the production of campaign videos within the campaign, which will include working with the Video Producer on the drafting of scripts and our ability to effectively broadcast the campaign films to a wide range of audiences.
· You may be required to take photos to support the campaign in a variety of situations in the UK and overseas. Training in the use of EJF’s camera can be provided as necessary. All images must be logged and entered into the EJF image database. All images (film or photos) are strictly sole and exclusive copyright to EJF.
· You will be asked to provide campaign updates to the EJF team, and (in addition to the regular weekly updates), provide the directors with internal reports and assessments of next steps and opportunities.
· It will be necessary to work together with the Communications Coordinator to optimise the public and corporate and other outreach of the campaign, thinking creatively to maximise the reach and effectiveness of the campaign message, including outreach to the relevant industry, chefs/restaurants, celebrities etc.
· You will have responsibility for certain aspects of budgetary management for the campaign, specifically reporting on any expenditures, including providing projected costs for any overseas trip, together with receipts and invoices post-trip.
· You will update the contacts database with all external contacts, specifically including media, policy makers, NGOs, and industry contacts for which you are the primary EJF contact.
· You will be asked to provide support to media releases and serve as a spokesperson as needed, under the direction and prior agreement of the directors. In collaboration with the directors, you will be required to develop proactive engagement with a range of media outlets in order to optimise our media coverage.
· You will be required to represent EJF and the campaign at public events (UK, overseas), presenting winning presentations to a diverse range of audiences and target groups.
· You will be requested to assist with the drafting and submitting of funding proposals to institutional funders and in identifying new funders where possible. You will also be required to support the monitoring and evaluation of the IUU campaign, and reporting to funders. This work will be undertaken together with the Directors and Executive Assistant.
· Assist in any other tasks and duties as may be required
A proven track record in the following is required:
· Superb communication skills – ability to give winning presentations in writing, face to face and as a public speaker
· A minimum of 3 years demonstrable campaigning experience in human rights/environment or a similar context, such as investigative journalism or overseas project research and management.
· Experience as a skilled negotiator
· Extensive experience of research and production of campaign reports and materials for publication
· Experience of field-based research
· Experience of working with, and contacts within media
· Ability to identify funders and produce winning proposals for support
· High calibre project management and monitoring and evaluation skills.
· A clear ability to establish priorities, meet multiple deadlines and work well under pressure.
· Ability to travel, often at short notice and routinely work evenings and weekends.
· Education to degree-level
Preferred skills/experience
· Foreign languages an asset
· Experience of camera work (film and photography)
· A higher degree in a related discipline
Location: Based at EJF’s London office with travel (sometimes at short notice) to global destinations as relevant.
Renumeration: £27,000 - £35,000
Bike scheme. Holiday 20 days (rising by 2 days per year of service), plus all statutory holidays. Time off in lieu is not granted (there will be weekend work).

2. VIDEO PRODUCER
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Environmental Justice Foundation’s dynamic team as a Video Producer. This role will work across all of EJF’s campaigns and fundraising initiatives to build the profile of our campaigns and fundraising across a variety of audiences through the production and distribution of visual content.
- Editing to a very high professional standard on FCP or similar.
- Superb scriptwriting and consistent origination of creative ideas for short films and campaign adverts
- Proven experience as a professional camera operator, working in difficult conditions on location, Experience of Z1 and EX3 (or similar) and in studio locations, including the use of studio lighting
- Management of digital assets
- Excellent contacts within film/TV/Advertising production .
- Foreign languages an asset.
- Experience of filming at sea.
- Directing voice overs
3. CAMPAIGNER AND INVESTIGATOR
This is an exciting opportunity to join as a senior member of the Environmental Justice Foundation’s dynamic team. The campaigner will work across EJF’s Oceans and climate campaigns with a specific focus on human trafficking and other Human Rights abuses connected to the seafood industry (both wild-capture and aquaculture) and climate and conflict and water grabbing.
You will work with the Directors, the Communications Coordinator and wider Oceans team to build the profile of these campaigns, raising public, corporate and political awareness of the environmental and social impacts of these industries.
This is a challenging role that demands proven relevant experience and skills to deliver on ambitious plans. You should have experience in managing complex research projects and the delivery of campaigns, with clear understanding and experience of research and campaigning including initiating, planning, implementing and evaluating campaigns. You must also be able to demonstrate excellent research, writing and communication skills. Alongside this you will have a proven track-record of the highest calibre of field-based research

According to a clear programme of work, with specific milestones, outputs and targets, agreed with EJF’s Directors you will:

- Provide detailed campaign updates, strategic and tactical analysis to the Directors and when necessary to the EJF team, and (in addition to the regular weekly updates), providing the directors with internal reports and clear, precise assessments of next steps and opportunities.
- Work with the Communications Coordinator to optimise the public, corporate and other outreach of the campaign, thinking creatively to maximise the reach and effectiveness of the campaign message, including outreach to relevant industry players, chefs/restaurants, celebrities etc.

- Maintain a detailed campaign agenda / calendar of outstanding tasks, outputs, targets and events.

A proven track record in the following is required:

- Proven experience as a desk and field based researcher
- Experience as a skilled negotiator

Renumeration: £35,000 - £40,000 according to experience. A pension scheme is being developed. Bike scheme offering £150 towards a purchase after 3 months.

1. Home Truths: Climate Witness Internship
About Home Truths:
HOME TRUTHS helps vulnerable communities feeling the impacts of climate change to document and share how their homes, land and livelihoods are affected. The project is designed to provide a platform for vulnerable communities to share their experiences on the frontlines of climate change and is an international network which can reach the people who have the power to make a difference with their messages.
HOME TRUTHS strives to provide the necessary basic equipment where possible as well as making sure that those with even the most basic equipment, from a simple mobile phone camera through to professional video cameras can make their voices heard.
Reporting to the Deputy Director and working with the Climate team your responsibilities will be:
- • Developing and carrying out effective communications plan to compliment Home Truth’s programme.
- • Researching potential grassroot partner organisations and individuals in climate vulnerable countries and regions globally
- • Developing long-distance relationships with potential partner organizations and individuals in the context of the Home Truth’s project
- • Recording and filing relevant contacts in the EJF database
- • Assisting the Deputy Director in assessing the needs and suitability of potential partners
- • Regularly monitoring environmental hazards associated with climate change and potential for witness testimonies
- • Researching potential UK networks for advocacy focused partnerships
- • Producing relevant content for social networking sites
Required Qualifications and Attributes:
- A degree level education
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Experience communicating across language barriers
- Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Internet research);
- Very strong organizational skills, with an ability to carry out assigned duties with attention to detail and under time pressure

2. Bees Campaign Internship
About the Bees Campaign
EJF, with PAN UK, have a launched a joint campaign to protect the UK's bees and other pollinators and the ecological and economic services they provide through an end to the use of harmful pesticides (particularly neonicotinoids) and through the promotion of habitat protection.
Position
EJF is seeking an enthusiastic volunteer to work as an assistant on our Save the Bees campaign. The candidate will have the opportunity to learn and develop key skills by assisting in various aspects of the charity’s work, including campaign and project development, advocacy, and report research.
The candidate should be friendly, confident, motivated, online-savvy, and creative. A strong interest in farming, pesticides, conservation and/or natural resource management is a must. Key skills to be brought to the post include strong communication (phone/email), writing and research skills. Past experience in desk-based research, and/or campaigning are also desirable.
This unpaid position is based at EJF’s Islington offices (London EC1R), and offers a fantastic opportunity to anyone seeking to gain valuable practical experience of working for a dynamic human rights and environment charity.

3. Communications Internship
This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to work alongside EJF’s Communications Coordinator to help build the charity’s communications across all platforms, raising awareness and interest in all aspects of our operations, from campaigns to fundraising.
Reporting to the Communications Coordinator and working with the whole EJF team your responsibilities will be:
- Assisting the Communications Coordinator to build and expand EJF’s network of media contacts, researching new contacts and organising spreadsheets of media lists.
- Arranging communications materials for media launches, including writing letters and press releases and arranging image release forms.
- Proofreading reports, briefings, articles, letters and newsletters as required.
- Pitching to media contacts by email and telephone to help place news stories in the press and media, with support from the Communications Coordinator.
- Monitoring EJF press coverage, collating and filing articles electronically and in paper files.
- Contributing to outreach projects including celebrity and artist/author engagement by researching agent contact details and drafting letters.
- Building social media engagement, identifying new contacts to communicate with via Facebook and Twitter and, with guidance, preparing new posts and tweets.
- Assisting with other communications tasks and duties as needed.
Required Qualifications and Attributes:
- A degree level education.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including confidence using the telephone, impeccable spelling and grammar and the ability to proofread.
- Strong computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, databases and internet research).
- Very strong organizational skills, with an ability to carry out assigned duties independently, with attention to detail and under time pressure.
- An interest in PR, Marketing and Communications.

4. Challenge and Corporate Events Internship
EJF is recruiting an intern for an exciting and unique opportunity to support the Challenge and Corporate Events Manager in organising our events schedule for summer 2013. The key focus will be planning and recruiting participants for our University ‘Climate Challenge’ and All Day August Football Tournament as well as securing corporate supporters for a variety of campaigns. The successful candidate needs to have outstanding interpersonal skills, an ability to work to strict deadlines and be able to manage their workload and time effectively.
Reporting to the Corporate and Challenge Events Manager, your main responsibilities will be:
- Assisting the Challenge Events Manager in planning and preparation for all challenge events and corporate campaigns
- Compiling and organising the application details of participating individuals
- Liasing with potential corporate partners
- Assisting with the marketing and PR strategy for all events
- Processing payments and deposits, maintaining a robust system of receipts and accounting
- Carrying out other administrative tasks on an adhoc basis, as necessary
Required Qualifications and Attributes:
- Proven administration experience

5. Web Assistant and IT Support Internship
EJF is currently looking to recruit a web assistant and IT support intern to work alongside a dynamic team ensuring that the EJF website is maintained and supporting EJF’s technical development. The role will specifically include assisting with the development of EJF’s website as well as the ongoing development of EJF’s IT resources including ongoing support.
This is an exciting position for someone who is looking to gain valuable experience in IT support and web design, developing specific skills in web development and technical support.
EJF is looking for someone who has the following skills:
- Web design, HTML, CMS and CSS and some knowledge of PHP
- Excellent knowledge of PC’s and ability to maintain their systems
- Specific knowledge of Mac’s and typical Mac troubleshooting is desirable
- The ability to troubleshoot general IT problems and a keenness to help staff members with troubleshooting issues
- Ability to assess EJF’s IT systems and make strong recommendations for ways of improving them.
The ideal candidate will be someone with an approachable, friendly manner and who has a willingness to learn more in order to develop EJF’s IT systems. You will be expected to work to your own devices as well as being a key member of the team. Staff members will rely on you for technical advice so a good knowledge of how to install new programme’s and software, fix small IT issues and maintain EJF’s computer equipment is important.
This position requires the ability to commit to at least 3 days a week or 27 hours spread over the week for a minimum of 3 months. You will gain valuable experience and EJF will provide excellent references when you leave EJF.
Remuneration: This is an unpaid internship. We will provide travel expenses within London (Zones 1 – 4) and lunch expenses.
