United States Department of State maintains Thailand's lowest possible ranking on its annual Trafficking in Persons Report

EJF views the decision by United States Government to keep Thailand on the lowest possible ranking - Tier 3 - of its annual Trafficking in Persons Report to be the correct decision.

“EJF views the decision by United States Government to keep Thailand on the lowest possible ranking - Tier 3 - of its annual Trafficking in Persons Report to be the correct decision. Our investigations show that it is clearly justified by the absolute and on-going failure of the Thai Government and seafood industry to apply a systematic, determined effort to combat the trafficking of labour; the extensive use of bonded, forced and slave labour and the common use of extreme violence to control workers in the seafood sector. Much more has to be done to to drive complete reform of the seafood sector in Thailand to outlaw and eradicate the slavery and other labour abuses which currently underwrite its export driven profitability. Until these actions are taken Thailand should remain on the lowest ranking alongside North Korea, Syria and other gross offenders against basic human rights.” - Steve Trent, EJF’s Executive Director
