Our Work

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)

EJF’s community offices in West Africa are based in the Sherbro River Estuary, on Sierra Leone’s southwest coast, and Robertsport, in Northern Liberia. Each office interacts with several dozen fishing communities that are dependent on artisanal fishing for their livelihoods.

Community Surveillance

EJF has developed a pioneering community surveillance programme in Sierra Leone, a small West African coastal nation emerging from a long civil war. This work is largely funded by the European Union.

In 2011, EJF started implementing a five-year project funded by the European Union. The EuropeAid grant is an extraordinary opportunity to leave a lasting legacy on local fishing communities in Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Fisheries Transparency

Attempts to sustainably manage and regulate fisheries are undermined by Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) – or pirate – fishing.
