Forests are at the centre of our world. They regulate climate – both local and global – purify water and prevent flooding, they reduce air pollution and provide life-saving medicines. Not to mention, of course, supplying oxygen for us to breathe.
Forests are the most diverse ecosystems on land, home to around 80% of the world’s terrestrial wildlife. Around 1.6 billion people depend directly on forests for their livelihoods, for food, shelter, and fuel. But in truth, we all depend on forests.
EJF is campaigning to stop the senseless destruction of these crucial habitats. Approximately 13 million hectares of forest are logged every year worldwide, and this must end.
EJF is also committed to the forests closer to home. In the UK, ancient woodland shelters more threatened wildlife than any other terrestrial habitat. To help preserve these rich habitats, EJF purchased an ancient wood in Wales in 2018 – where creatures, and carbon stores, will remain untouched.
