Protecting human rights
Join us and demand protection for climate refugees
We believe that environmental security is not just about quality of life, it is a basic human right
Everyday, vulnerable people are being stripped of their right to land, freedom and their identity, victims of the environmental destruction inflicted on our shared planet.
Driven by our core values of integrity, innovation and impact, EJF uses investigations and film to uncover these environmental and human rights abuses, giving a voice to the voiceless. We work for environmental justice; to protect the natural environment and the people and wildlife that depend upon it. Environmental security is a basic human right, and we go to the ends of the earth to defend people and planet.
Our vision is for a world where natural habitats and environments can sustain and be sustained by the communities that depend on them.
Protecting marine environments, biodiversity and livelihoods
Our oceans are being pushed to the brink, putting the lives and livelihoods of billions of people across the globe at risk. EJF’s Oceans Campaign works to combat illegal and unsustainable fishing, stamp out human rights abuses driven by these illicit activities and protect the coastal communities and precious wildlife that depend on our oceans.
EJF's Sharks Campaign
Sharks have been on the planet for over 400 million years, long before the first dinosaur emerged on Earth. They have witnessed centuries of the world’s history, but human activity may bring all of this to an end - an entire ancient species facing an early extinction. Around 100 million sharks are killed by humans every single year - the equivalent to approximately 11,415 deaths per hour. EJF is working to protect critical shark species across West Africa and globally.

Slavery, ‘pirate’ fishing and other serious crimes continue to plague Thailand’s seafood sector.
EJF believes that solutions to 'pirate' fishing and slavery in Thailand’s fishing sector are available, practical and achievable through a multi-track approach emphasising leadership, coordinated joint action and genuine commitment from all stakeholders. This report recalls and builds on the recommendations made in EJF’s 2015 report Pirates and Slaves. EJF also acknowledges and reiterates all recommendations made to Thailand in the 2015 US Department of State Trafficking in Persons report.
Securing international protection for climate change refugees
EJF’s Climate Campaign aims to secure international protection for the world’s growing population of climate refugees, forced to flee their homes in the wake of mass destruction and greater insecurity.
Beyond Borders Film
Beyond Borders, security and military officials, including Brigadier General Stephen A. Cheney, United States Military Corps (RET), Rear Admiral David W. Titley, United States Navy (RET) and the UK Government’s former Climate and Energy Security Envoy Sir David King examine the role of climate change as a catalyst for mass migration and conflicts into the future.
Climate change is an environmental and a human rights issue. EJF views climate change as a primary threat to world peace and security, development and human rights in the 21st century.
EJF’s Climate Campaign works to secure international awareness and protection for climate refugees: those who have done the least to contribute to climate change, but who are first and worst affected.
We believe in climate justice in a warming world.
Calling for an end to toxic pesticides
Pesticides are poison. They have been linked to long-term health problems - particularly lethal for vulnerable, developing country farmers - and to the decline of vital insect pollinators which are crucial to our way of life. EJF’s Pesticides Campaign aims to eradicate the use of toxic pesticides and their harmful effects on people and wildlife.
Life without bees is unimaginable. Help us to give them food and a home, and end the use of harmful pesticides in our gardens and on our farms.
Bees support not only the variety of the food we eat, but the quality and nutritional value. Their contribution to the global economy for providing free pollinator services is estimated at £130 billion; and here in the UK, around £510 million that is ‘donated’ to the national economy.
Supporting tomorrow’s environmental defenders
By training local environmental & human rights defenders in research, film, advocacy and investigative skills, we give a voice to the voiceless, helping them to expose the threats that environmental abuses pose to their communities and wellbeing.

A track record of securing lasting and global protection
From driving a global ban on the deadly pesticide 'Endosulfan', to ending state-sponsored forced child labour in Uzbekistan’s cotton industry and combatting illegal fishing in West Africa, EJF has a track record of securing lasting protection for the world’s most vulnerable communities and their natural environments.
