Type of appointment: Fixed-term

Remuneration: 50,000-70,000 baht per month, depending on experience

Duration of contract: 12 months (potentially renewable or convertible to a permanent position, subject to performance review)

Location: Bangkok based with opportunity to travel often.

This position is open to Thai citizens only.

Position Overview

The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) is an international non-profit organization working globally to protect natural environments and the human rights of people who depend on them. EJF is working in Thailand to end illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and human rights abuses on fishing vessels and actively promote improvements to policymaking, corporate governance and management of fisheries.

EJF is seeking to employ a Thailand Campaigner to join the Thailand team. This position will include conducting both desk-based and field-based research and investigations work alongside EJF colleagues and local partners into a range of topics including the practice of bottom trawling, assisting with ongoing communications and collaborations with relevant Thai Government ministries and departments and engagement with a range of stakeholders across the fishing industry aimed at progressing reforms.

Successful candidates should be comfortable working independently, be adept at conducting both desk-based and field-based research, confident in public speaking, and be prepared to travel within Thailand.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Fluency in Thai

  • Professional proficiency in the English language

  • A degree in any relevant discipline (journalism, social science, environmental science, marine sciences, etc)

  • Relevant work experience (journalism, NGOs, private sector, field work, etc)

  • Demonstrable experience forming and maintaining relationships with various stakeholders

  • Strong communication and writing skills

  • Ability to use desk-based internet research to gather information

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, etc)

Desirable skills and experience:

  • A higher degree in a relevant discipline

  • Demonstrable interest in or experience working on any of the following topics; bottom trawling, destructive fishing practices, fish stock assessments or biodiversity assessments, marine conservation issues, global seafood industry.

  • Professional camera experience (film or photography)

  • Ability to work independently

  • Experience in conducting field-based research projects

  • Fluency in additional Southeast Asian languages (Khmer, Indonesian or Burmese) an asset

  • Car driving license
