New project collecting and recycling ghost gear in Thailand
The Net Free Seas project – run by the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) and funded by the Norwegian Retailers’ Environment Fund – is aiming to rid Thailand’s waters of deadly discarded fishing nets. Coastal communities will collect discarded nets which will be sent to make a variety of goods, such as sports and kitchen equipment. This will protect ocean wildlife and support local villages at the same time.
Ghost gear - the deadliest form of plastics pollution
Ghost gear is specifically designed to catch ocean wildlife, these discarded, lost or abandoned nets form floating death traps. At least 640,000 tonnes of gear are estimated to be left in the seas every year, and drift for decades entangling and chocking whales, dolphins, turtles, seabirds, and even entire coral reefs.
As well as a damaging and cruel effect on wildlife, ghost gear can impact livelihoods. For instance, in the Baltic Sea, a single lost gillnet can destroy US$20,000 worth of seafood. Local coastal communities, which are already bearing the brunt of illegal fishing, are having their income further threatened by such losses.
The generous funding from the Norwegian Retailers’ Environment Fund will allow EJF to employ a project coordinator who will engage with communities, discussing with them the dangers of ghost nets, and how they would like the scheme to work in their area. The coordinator will also provide training for the fishers on how to avoid losing nets themselves. The initial funding will allow the project to run for the first year, and the team is hoping to get ten communities on board. The work, which commences on August 1, builds on a successful pilot project in which three fishing villages were able to collect over a tonne of nets in the course of a year.
“Ghost fishing poses an enormous threat to marine life and the ecosystem in our oceans. Fishing gear is made of plastic, killing fish and other marine lives for decades before eventually being degraded into microplastic. It is highly important that lost nets, pots and other fishing gear are cleaned up from our ocean, and we have high confidence that EJF will contribute significantly to do exactly that.” says Rasmus Hansson, CEO in the Norwegian Retailers’ Environment Fund.
EJF’s Executive Director Steve Trent said: “The damage that ghost nets inflict every year is vast, as these nets continue to catch and kill marine wildlife. This project will empower coastal communities to clean their own seas of these floating death traps. This will provide crucial protection to ocean wildlife while at the same time giving much-needed economic support to local fishing communities.”
The process of tackling a global problem
The process itself is as low impact as possible. Once the nets are collected they are cleaned using salt water, compressed into blocks, and transported to the partner recycling factory. Here, they are made into pellets and sold to end-user companies which make them into useful products.
EJF has lined up two such companies that will be the first to form part of this circular economy. Qualy is a Thai design brand with a focus on community and environment, which has already used the nets to produce a keychain attachment to help people minimise touching surfaces during the coronavirus crisis and visors to prevent infection. Starboard is a water sports company that makes windsurf and paddleboards, among other sports equipment. They will contribute fishing nets they find through their Plastic Offset Program – a project that regularly cleans up beaches in Thailand.
The money from the nets will either be paid into a fund for the village, to be used towards projects such as communal facilities or conservation projects designed to help communities adapt to climate change or given to individuals as they present the nets for recycling. Each community will be consulted on which model they would like to follow.
The project will be implemented with the support of the Thai Department of Fisheries, which has already been invaluable in the pilot work, facilitating collaboration with the three participating communities.
Once the project is successfully running in Thailand, EJF hopes to expand it to other countries, and in particular West Africa, where marine plastics pollution is rife.

About The Norwegian Retailers’ Environment Fund
- The Norwegian Retailers’ Environment Fund is a non-profit association, receiving NOK 0,50 for every plastic bag the member retailers sell in Norway. The funds are earmarked for environmental measures that fulfills at least one of the Fund’s purposes:
- Reduce usage of plastic bags
- Reduce plastic pollution
- Increase resource efficiency of plastics, including recycling

- Thailand has a commercial fishing fleet comprising over 10,000 vessels – Commercial vessels are those that are above 10 gross tonnes in size. In addition, Thailand has over 30,000 small-scale fishing vessels across the country.
- The Net Free Seas project will work with small-scale fishing communities to ensure that they can accrue the most financial benefit from participation in the scheme.
- Studies shown that gillnets are one of the most commonly lost nets. They are also considered to be one of the most damaging type of ghost net. Their length, increased soak time, and gear stress contribute to fish and other marine animals being fatally entrapped.
