The UK's withdrawal from the Energy Charter Treaty is a huge step for climate action

By EJF Staff

Yesterday, it was announced that the UK government would be withdrawing from the Energy Charter Treaty.

Steve Comment, CEO and Founder of the Environmental Justice Foundation, said: "This is a huge step forward for the UK. Fossil fuel companies are using this archaic treaty to sue governments over policies that negatively impact their profits, undermining progress towards climate commitments and investments in renewable energy. EJF welcomes the UK’s recent decision to withdraw from the Energy Charter Treaty and urges other climate progressive countries to follow-suit"
