Why we are leaving X (formerly Twitter)
We have decided to end all EJF’s activities on X, formerly Twitter. This decision was made because of the political and moral issues we have with the platform, its owner and the actions they are promoting.
We have found it increasingly difficult to navigate through the sea of misinformation, hatred, and AI or robot-generated material on X. We believe it has become a platform that allows for the proliferation of hateful material and misinformation, while disregarding science and facts along with the harm it is causing. X is making our world more divided and dangerous, for the benefit of a tiny minority at the expense of the many. The platform, its policies and its owner are indefensible and are driving devastating real-world impacts.
At EJF, we work to protect the natural world, defend our basic human right to a secure environment, and provide a platform for the voices of the world’s most marginalised people. We believe that these values are central to meaningful and constructive dialogue and that our online presence must reflect our values and goals.
X is now a tool for pushing our world towards a more cruel, violent future, and we cannot in good conscience continue using it. For these reasons, I encourage you to leave as well.
We will, necessarily, be losing the large following we have on X. To support our work and the work of colleagues and partner organisations across the globe we aim to rebuild our audience on Bluesky and redirect people’s attention to our other platforms and you can still find us on Linkedin, Instagram, and Facebook.
Our new digital strategy will continue to make the most of our films, advocacy, investigations, and campaigns, and we are looking to open new doors of engagement with our supporters and visual-led storytelling.
Of course, we understand that taking this position has draw-backs and may affect the reach of our messages, but in leaving X behind, we are actively looking to a better way of doing things that will best represent the work we do, maintaining a clear moral position, while continuing to deliver high-impact outcomes to protect and restore our natural world and defend human rights.
