Based: Maputo, Mozambique (exceptional candidates living elsewhere in the country may be considered)

Contract: Fixed-term, ending September 2026.

Salary range and benefits: competitive, depending on experience.

Reporting to: Senior Researcher in EJF’s Oceans Team.

Position overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join the team at the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF): one of the world's leading non-profits working at the intersection of environmental conservation and human rights. We are lean, agile, creative, strategic, and, most of all, results-driven.

The Mozambique Oceans Officer will provide essential support to the EJF Oceans team by developing and coordinating a national network of academics, civil society groups, and journalists in Mozambique who are actively working on, or interested in working on, the issues posed to the country by distant-water industrial fishing vessels. Such issues will include illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and associated abuses such as forced labour.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the active sharing of knowledge and information throughout the network and serve as a conduit between its members and the broader body of actors working to address IUU fishing and associated abuses. This will include disseminating relevant news and publications, providing technical and logistical support to the network’s members as required, and helping to amplify their work through increased engagement and readership.

The coordinator will be part of the EJF Oceans team, which is working in 15 countries to drive the necessary changes at local, regional and global scales to detect and deter IUU fishing and human rights abuses. This role offers superb opportunities to learn and progress professionally within a high-impact international organisation. Join our world-leading professional team to help protect people, wildlife, and our shared natural world.
