Campaigns
Ocean
Protecting marine ecosystems and livelihoods
Our ocean is being pushed to the brink, putting the lives and livelihoods of billions of people across the globe at risk. EJF’s ocean campaign works to combat illegal and unsustainable fishing, stamp out human rights abuses driven by these illicit activities and protect the coastal communities and precious wildlife that depend on our ocean.
On the Precipice: crime and corruption in Ghana's Chinese-owned trawler fleet
Fisheries that millions of Ghanaians depend on are at risk of collapse as a result of brazen illegal fishing, catastrophic overfishing by Chinese-owned industrial trawlers and a culture of corruption which has allowed these crimes to go unpunished.
EJF’s investigation draws on evidence from interviews with Ghanaian crew who have witnessed these abuses first-hand, filmed evidence, a network of informants and analysis of vessel tracking data. The picture which emerges is one of systematic corruption that enables illegal fishing and human rights abuses to go unreported and unpunished in the country’s waters. From port authorities to Navy officials, EJF alleges that the web of corruption is so deep and entangled that sustainability, and the defence of human rights, is impossible without reform.
Climate
Driving global action to avoid climate breakdown
EJF’s climate campaign aims to secure international action to decarbonise economies around the world, protect the natural environments which are a vital store of carbon, and ensure climate justice for all. We campaign for the protection for the world’s growing population of climate refugees, forced to flee their homes in the wake of the climate crisis.
Manifesto to Combat Global Heating
The climate manifesto brings to bear EJF’s long experience of working with people on the frontlines of the climate crisis and combines it with existing scientific research to create a clear roadmap of measures that can be taken to achieve zero-carbon by 2035.
Forests
Demanding an end to deforestation
EJF’s forests campaign is intimately connected to our work combating the climate crisis and protecting wildlife. Forests contain a wealth of biodiversity – and stores of carbon which safeguard the Earth’s climate. Environmental security is a human right of future generations. We stand with them, and the indigenous communities who depend on forests.
Mangroves represent far more than just a ‘bio-shield’. Despite being regarded for many years as ‘wastelands’, ripe for development, it is now known that mangroves provide coastal communities with many services and utilizable products, and perform vital ecosystem functions.
This report concludes that the conversion of mangrove habitat into shrimp farms, tourist resorts, agricultural and urban land over the past decades, as well as destruction of coral reefs, contributed significantly to the catastrophic loss of human lives and settlements during the 2004 tsunami. Conserving and restoring coastal mangrove areas is essential if coastal communities are to recover and be protected from future similar events.
